Netflix and DreamWorks Animation have announced an expansion of their already established multi-year deal. The deal makes the streaming service the home for a lineup of new original family friendly series everywhere except China, and also includes the streaming rights to DreamWorks Animation’s films as well.

But what’s perhaps most exciting is two of the projects confirmed in this new deal. One is Trollhunters from Pan’s Labyrinth and Crimson Peak director Guillermo del Toro. The other is a re-imagining of Voltron.

You can find more info below.

We’ve been hearing about del Toro’s Trollhunters for many years now. It’s based on his book of the same name (read our review here), and was originally planned as a movie first set up at Disney back in 2009 and then eventually moving to DreamWorks in 2010. The series is described as something that will “unleash a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown.”

Del Toro has been working behind the scenes as a creative consultant and producer on various DreamWorks Animation productions for a handful of years now as well, including Megamind, Kung Fu Panda 2, Rise of the Guardians, and the upcoming Kung Fu Panda 3 and How to Train Your Dragon 3.

Of the announcement, Netflix Vice President of Original Series Cindy Holland said:

“DreamWorks Animation is synonymous with great storytelling that families around the world enjoy. It’s with great pleasure that we expand on an already successful relationship with DreamWorks Animation to bring more premium kids and family television to Netflix members globally.”

With DreamWorks Animation President Ann Daly adding:

“This agreement adds to the incredible foundation we’ve built together with Netflix over a number of years across both film and television. We are proud to work closely with Netflix to continue delivering high-quality programming to audiences around the world.”

The deal will begin this year with Trollhunters and Voltron, but will also continue existing series such as The Adventures of Puss in Boots, Dinotrux, and Dragons: Race to the Edge. Other new series based on recent and upcoming movie properties, as well as classic properties, will also be developed over the duration of the deal.
