Paramount Pictures attached a surprising trailer to Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. Following much speculation and rumor, it has now been confirmed that this trailer is for the new Dan Trachtenberg film 10 Cloverfield Lane, starring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr.
Now, going by the title of the film and that it’s a Bad Robot production, one would assume that this is a sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield. Well, this is partially correct. As producer J.J. Abrams would explain, the film isn’t exactly a sequel, describing it as a “blood-relative” to Cloverfield. Check out his full statement, plus the official trailer and poster, in the story here below.
As you might expect, a film from Bad Robot is shrouded in mystery. What else can you expect from a film with the word Cloverfield in the title from the production studio? This appears to be the project that Trachtenberg was working on that went by the name Valencia, according to /Film, and was filmed in New Orleans in late 2014, and edited under cover of Bad Robot, which was also working on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The script was written by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken.
10 Cloverfield Lane is coming to theaters this March, yet no official plotline has been released as of yet, but here’s what Abrams told Collider about its relation to Cloverfield:
“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
But what does “blood relative” mean? That isn’t exactly clear. The film doesn’t have the same characters or found-footage storytelling as its cousin; heck, the marketing isn’t quite the same either as the first Cloverfield, which had a viral campaign where interested fans purchased Slusho t-shirts and sifted through a variety of blurry photos on the 1-18-08.com viral website. However, the mystery elements remain the same. As to why Goodman, Winstead, and Gallagher’s characters are stuck in a bunker, that remains to be seen, although the initial reports on Valencia said that it was about a girl who wakes up in an underground cellar after a car accident who’s told by a strange companion that a nuclear attack has devastated society.
Whatever this turns out to be, we will be sure to keep you updated as more trailers and images are released. Until then, 10 Cloverfield Lane will hit theaters on March 11, 2016.
