Remember how there was a rumor that said that Hulk would be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and that the plot of the film would be based on the “Planet Hulk” story arc? Well, James Gunn repeatedly denied those rumors, which were pretty much debunked when Mark Ruffalo signed on to join Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok, the final film of the titular trilogy. In what has been described as a buddy film which would feature the two Avengers who go on a cosmic journey, there were questions on how Hulk would actually meet up with the god of thunder considering that he left the Avengers after the events of Age of Ultron.
It appears that there may be an answer to that question, which leads us back to how Marvel would incorporate a “Planet Hulk” story arc into the MCU. We have to stress that the following should be considered a rumor, and we are going to treat it as such until we get something substantial from a confirmed source.
Again, if you are interested in spoilers, then feel free to check out more about this rumor below.
If you are at this point, it must mean that you are somewhat interested in seeing how Hulk reunites with his fellow avenger.
The latest rumor comes from Geek.com. If that site sounds familiar it was because they were the ones to report the rumor that Cate Blanchett would play Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death. Based on that report, Hela and Loki hatch a scheme to banish Thor and destroy his signature weapon, Mjolnir.
The site’s rumor provides a few more details that reveal that Thor actually tries to prevent Loki and Hela from succeeding with their plan, and fails, which then results in the destruction of Mjolnir and his banishment. So if the rumors are true, then don’t expect any trickery from the Asgardian god of mischief.
Now here’s where a much bigger rumor comes into play. According to them, Thor gets banished to a gladiator-like world where he meets the planet’s greatest champion, The Incredible Hulk:
Thor knows that he has to get to some MacGuffin weapon object to defeat Hela and Loki (could this be the Infinity Gauntlet that Thanos is in possession of, or maybe an assemblage of Infinity Stones?) and he has to get off the planet. Thor runs through all of his alien opponents in gladiatorial combat, even without his trademark hammer. Finally, Thor has to face the current champion of the arena, and wouldn’t you know who that ends up being? The Hulk.
In addition, the site provides another rumor about Hulk’s persona.
A “Planet Hulk” story arc being used in the MCU has been circulating for quite some time. As aforementioned, it was once a rumored plot for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. There was a rumor that the Hulk would have caused so much devastation in the events of Age of Ultron, that the Avengers were forced to banish Hulk into outer space where he would crash land on the gladiator world and become its champion. After becoming its ruler, Hulk would gather the planet’s mightiest warriors and return to earth to get revenge on the Avengers.
Both rumors ended up being debunked. But that doesn’t mean that we won’t see a “Planet Hulk” story in the near future. In 2012, Feige entertained the idea of using the story arc in the MCU:
“I don’t think there’s a lot that we couldn’t do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe. “Planet Hulk’ is a cool story, “˜World War Hulk’ is a cool story. I think there’s pitfalls of continuity-overload, and mythology getting so dense that it almost collapses in on itself [with those cosmic projects]. It happens every few decades or so in the comics. Apart from that, I’d say everything is on the table.”
If the rumors are to be believed, then it seems like Feige and company may have figured out how to weave “Planet Hulk” into the MCU without running into those “pitfalls.”
Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok is set to open in theaters on November 3, 2017.
