Oscar Winning ‘Room’ Star Brie Larson In Talks For ‘Captain Marvel’

Captain Marvel

It’s been long wondered which actress would be chosen to take on the title role in Marvel’s Captain Marvel, and we now might have an answer to that question.

It’s being reported that Brie Larson, who just scored herself an Academy Award for her work playing a mother trying to take care of her son while being held captive in the simply titled Room, is the frontrunner for the role and is now in negotiations with Marvel to see if a deal can be agreed upon.

Variety, who broke the news, says it’s not clear just how deep the negotiations between Larson and Marvel are at the moment, but that she is the top choice for the job and Larson is leaning toward accepting.

As was reported in April of last year, the screenplay for Captain Marvel is being penned by Meg LeFauve (Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), though no director has been chosen for the job yet. The report says that this could be because Marvel wanted to secure their actress first and introduce her in another movie before doing the standalone, which is nothing new these days.

Many whispers regarding Captain Marvel have been floating around since the movie was first announced along with the two-part Avengers: Infinity War (perhaps where the character will first appear?), Captain America: Civil War, and more back in 2014. These have included the role secretly being cast with a cameo in Age of Ultron possible; Rebecca Ferguson being Marvel’s top choice for the role; and Ava DuVernay and Angelina Jolie being possible directors for the movie. But none of these have played out so far, with the first one obviously untrue and the second looking very unlikely.

In addition to Room, Larson is known for her roles in United States of Tara, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Spectacular Now, Short Term 12, and Trainwreck. Her upcoming roles include Kong: Skull Island, which is scheduled for release in March of 2017 and stars other Marvel actors including Tom Hiddleston, Toby Kebbell, Samuel L. Jackson, and John C. Reilly.
