MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror

Earlier this week it was reported that Jessica McNamee was cast as the female lead in MEG, the giant megalodon shark movie from Warner Brothers. Now comes word of another actress attached to a role.

Ruby Rose, one of the stars of the hit Netflix original series Orange is the New Black, has entered into negotiations to join the cast. If a deal gets works out, the actress will join Jason Statham and Fan Bingbing on the cast.

The movie is based on author Steve Alten‘s book MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror. Here’s a description of the book’s story:

On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean’s deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with the largest and most ferocious predator in the history of the animal kingdom. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor is haunted by what he’s sure he saw but still can’t prove exists – Carcharodon megalodon, the massive mother of the great white shark. The average prehistoric Meg weighs in at twenty tons and could tear apart a Tyrannosaurus rex in seconds. Written off as a crackpot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Taylor refuses to forget the depths that nearly cost him his life. With a Ph.D. in paleontology under his belt, Taylor spends years theorizing, lecturing, and writing about the possibility that Meg still feeds at the deepest levels of the sea. But it takes an old friend in need to get him to return to the water, and a hotshot female submarine pilot to dare him back into a high-tech miniature sub. Diving deeper than he ever has before, Taylor will face terror like he’s never imagined, and what he finds could turn the tides bloody red until the end of time. MEG is about to surface. When she does, nothing and no one is going to be safe, and Jonas must face his greatest fear once again.

As mentioned above, it was reported earlier this week that Jessica McNamee had been cast as the female lead. Oddly enough, however, there’s no mention of her being cast in The Hollywood Reporter’s exclusive report that Ruby Rose is in talks. Even stranger, Variety, who exclusively reported the McNamee casting, also doesn’t mention the actress in their coverage of the Rose casting, which is basically the same as their McNamee report. Whether this means McNamee was incorrectly reported or a deal wasn’t worked out and Rose is now in talks for the female lead or if they simply didn’t mention her in this new report and both actresses are set to star in the movie, I have no idea. But it did seem a tad off. We shall find out soon enough I’m sure.

Rose is said to be playing a character named Jaxx, a “kick-ass engineering genius and member of the marine research team.”

MEG is scheduled to be released on March 2, 2018.
