By now you may have heard about the bad reviews surrounding Suicide Squad, and we will, of course, confirm that for ourselves (or at least myself) if it is truly as bad as critics make it out to be. But looking at the behind-the-scenes drama that has gone on (including the fact that there was two different cuts, one of which was made by a trailer company), the film looks to be continuing the DCEU’s slide down being a terrible shared universe franchise. Whether or not the film can save DCEU is up to the general audience. It is tracking for a $140 million opening, so that is something to look forward to but sources say it would have to gross at least $750-$800 million to break even.
While these negative reviews aren’t doing the film or studio any favors, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and members of the Suicide Squad team such as stars Cara Delevingne and Margot Robbie and director David Ayer are responding to these criticisms and defending the film. But are they merely just campaigning for the film or do they genuinely have good things to say about the film. You decide for yourself below.
We will start with a few of Jenkins’ tweets, which were posted yesterday.
A sign of solidarity I guess. That’s always good to see that these DCEU directors have each other’s support. Jenkins says that she thought that Suicide Squad was great, and not because she’s “in the DC world.” But if Suicide Squad does end up performing poorly at the box office, all this does is put more attention and pressure on Wonder Woman to be good and help save the DCEU from itself.
While at the film’s London premiere, Suicide Squad‘s Delevingne, who plays Enchantress, told Reuters:
“The critics have been absolutely horrific, they’re really, really horrible. You know, I just don’t think they like superhero movies.”
Delevingne also said that while “this movie isn’t perfect,” it was made for the fans. “It was made for the fans” seems to be the response from anyone involved when a comic book movie is getting overwhelmingly negative responses. Even Ayers said that after he tweeted a famous Emiliano Zapata quote which translated into “I’d prefer to die standing, than to live on my knees.”
Like Ayer, Delevingne stands by the film she was in. I’m not sure how she would benefit if she were to give it bad publicity.
Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn, said:
“At the end of the day critical acclaim is really nice, but we made it for the fans. If the fans like it then we did our job.”
Ayer added:
“I made the movie for real people who live in the real world. I made the movie for people who actually love movies and go and see movies. The movie’s a lot of fun and the fans are really going to enjoy this.”
We’ll just have to see if Suicide Squad can be critic proof when it opens in theaters this weekend.
