Joseph Gordon-Levitt Believes ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Ending Was “Perfect”

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in The Dark Knight Rises

There is always one weak film in a trilogy, and for Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy that film was The Dark Knight Rises. Of course, no film is perfect, and while it was ambitious and had great action, it was bloated and clunky.

Still, if the trilogy had to end one way, no one could really have done it any better than what Nolan had to offer. And it seems that Joseph Gordon-Levitt believes that it was the perfect ending. More on the story below.

At the end of The Dark Knight Rises, Batman makes the ultimate sacrifice by flying a massive bomb into the horizon where it detonates, seemingly killing him in the process. Or that is what we were led to believe as we later saw Bruce Wayne sipping some nice coffee with Selina Kyle in some villa. But the mantle of the Bat wouldn’t die as he left every Bat-gadget to Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake (a.k.a. Robin), who would assume the title of Batman.

People did have a few issues with the ending of the film, something that Gordon-Levitt doesn’t necessarily agree with. In an interview with CinemaBlend, the actor spoke about how the ending was the perfect ending to the trilogy:

“I know we’re all used to the sort of Marvel movies, which are just kind of endless series. They don’t really have a beginning, middle, and end. But I think Nolan very much thought of that movie as a conclusion, and there’s a theme that runs through all three of those movies that begins in the first movie, runs through the second movie and it concludes in that moment where he says that Batman is more than a man, Batman is a symbol. And so to have another man other than Bruce Wayne kind of becoming Batman at the end of that trilogy, I think that’s the perfect ending to that story.”

While it may sound a little bit bias coming from the actor who had a major role in the film, he does have a point. The Dark Knight trilogy had no intentions of being a part of the DCEU, which was just barely in its infancy. In addition to that, the trilogy had a true ending, not like any of the other previous Batman films that came before it where each film had an open-ended ending.

Marvel, on the other hand, is doing its own thing, and eventually will have to address its own end. It is important to note that The Dark Knight Rises also foresaw the end of Bruce Wayne as Batman, and that eventually, he would have to give up being the hero and would need to give up his title to someone who is worthy of carrying on the “symbol” of Batman. So it makes sense that Nolan gave the movie that kind of ending.

  1. it wasn’t a perfect ending, Chris Bale just didn’t wanna do any more movies, so rather then potentially let anyone else take over as Bruce Wayne the decision was to make it impossiable to do sequals. this decision really hurt WB down the road as they couldn’t use the dark knight to build a cinimatic universe off of.
