Why Isn’t Marvel Movie Music More Memorable? (Video)

The Avengers Movie Group Photo

One of the best YouTube channels out there, Every Frame A Painting, is back with a brand new video. It’s been a few months since the last video uploaded by the channel, and only a handful have arrived in the past year. But the waits are worth it. Another reason it’s so good: there’s no dumping daily videos to milk views. When inspired to make a new video, a new video is made.

The latest video, titled “The Marvel Symphonic Universe,” focuses on movie music. More specifically, why Marvel movies, as massive as they are, really don’t have memorable music that people instantly recognize. You can watch the video along with a second bonus video below.

Now, plenty of Marvel fans will step forward and say they know lots of the music from the movies…as plenty have already pointed out in the YouTube comments. Which is fine. Music resonates with some people more than others. For me personally, I adore movie scores, listen to them all the time, and have many favorites. I also love Marvel movies. But I couldn’t have thought of a single music piece from one of their movies if asked. And I had no idea that was the case until watching this. I’m betting lots of people will be in the same boat. It’s definitely an interesting subject to dive into.

Also discussed in the video is “temp music.” The second video found below complements the first video by including many examples of this.

Off the top of your head, could you sing the theme from Star Wars? How about James Bond? Or Harry Potter? But here’s the kicker: can you sing any theme from a Marvel film? Despite 13 films and 10 billion dollars at the box office, the Marvel Cinematic Universe lacks a distinctive musical identity or approach. So let’s try to answer the question: what is missing from Marvel music?

  1. I was the same as you. Apart from the main Avengers and Captain America themes I can not think of any great Marvel music. I own most of the soundtracks but really never listen to them as much as say the Pirates or Star Wars films. I just never really knew I thought this way until it was pointed out in the video.
