Though a critical flop, the interest in seeing MacGruber 2 has never died. It’s been nearly 6 years since the original film based on the Saturday Night Live skit was released, and any hopes of seeing a follow-up have been kept alive thanks to its cult following. In fact, the last substantial thing we’ve heard about a MacGruber 2 was way back in 2013, when the thought of producing a sequel using crowdfunding was being explored. While plans for that fell through, it seems as though MacGruber director Jorma Taccone will be giving us that sequel we’ve all be waiting for. Check out the full story below.
Taccone confirmed that he is in the process of writing out the sequel by posting a few photos of the cover of the screenplay.
Of course, based on the “Super Duper Rough” title, we can assume that he is in the very early stages of writing the script. There is actually no telling when the sequel will go into production now that Forte is working on the successful The Last Man On Earth. A sequel can only mean that Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe will likely both return to reprise their respective roles.
While the thought of a MacGruber 2 sounds exciting, it’s going to be a tough sell considering the first one was a massive bomb at the box office, and failed to meet even the minimal expectations. So with so much going against it, a studio might not want to even think about putting money into another movie could possibly be another bomb. But then again, if they entertained the idea of crowdfunding a film, who is to stop them from taking a look at it once more. If anything, the film could find its way on a streaming platform like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon.
Taccone’s Pop Star: Never Stop Popping was also released earlier this year, and garnered the same cult fan base and met the same box office dud end. So while the films are falling short of box office expectations, Taccone’s offerings have no problem finding a cult fan base. It’s just a matter of finding someone who believes in the project as much as the fans do. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on any updates should they come in.
