J.K. Rowling's Cormoran Strike

HBO has acquired the United States and Canadian rights to Cormoran Strike, a limited series based on Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling‘s crime novel series of the same name.

The limited series will run in three separate “event series.” The first will be three hours in length and based on the first book in the series, The Cuckoo’s Calling. The next part will be based on book two, The Silkworm, followed by book three, Career of Evil. Each of the latter two parts of the limited series will be two hours.

The series follows Cormoran Strike, played by Tom Burke (Only God Forgives, The Musketeers), an injured war veteran and private detective working out of a small office in London who uses his unique talents to help solve three cases that police have struggled to resolve.

Here’s a description of the first book from Amazon:

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

You may think you know detectives, but you’ve never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you’ve never seen them under an investigation like this.

Rowling actually penned the books under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, and it wasn’t revealed that it was actually the Harry Potter author behind them until

The first two parts of the limited series are written by Ben Richards (MI-5, Outcasts), with the first part set to be directed by Michael Keillor (Shameless, Mr Selfridge). Tom Edge (Lovesick) wrote the third part.

Filming will begin this fall. A fourth book in the series is planned for 2017.
