Spoilers for American Horror Story: Season 6

Last week, the creators of American Horror Story flipped the script in a way rarely, if ever, done before in television history. For five episodes of Season 6 we watched “My Roanoke Nightmare” showing the re-enactments of the Miller family and their harrowing ordeal in a haunted North Carolina colonial mansion. Actors Audrey (Sarah Paulson) and Dominic (Cuba Gooding Jr.) played the roles of Shelby (Lily Rabe) and Matt (Andre Holland), and they were stalked by vengeance-seeking ghosts led The Butcher, portrayed by Agnes Mary Winstead (Kathy Bates). That story we discovered was actually the highest TV show of the year and now producers want a sequel. So director Sidney James (Cheyenne Jackson) has the perfect pitch, “Return To Roanoke: 3 Days In Hell,” where the real characters and the actors who played them come together “Big Brother” style in a haunted reality show. Of course staging the show at a real haunted house does not end well. We are informed by graphic that only one person survives the ordeal and everything recorded is found footage. Already one of the new cast was killed as Rory (Evan Peters) was murdered by the nurse ghosts, fulfilling the “R” for their MURDER wall”¦

More below.

Agnes is even scarier than the Butcher! After “My Roanoke Nightmare,” Agnes had a mental breakdown and she was barred from appearing on the sequel season. She made her presence known last week, but this week she goes on a rampage 5 minutes in, murdering three with a cleaver, including Sidney. In the house, no one can find Rory’s body and Audrey believes he staged his death to go pursue a Brad Pitt movie, as well as other women.

Dominic is obsessed with being the biggest d*ck in the history of reality television, because that equals screen time and ratings. His plan takes a pause when Agnes appears in the house and cleaves Shelby in the back, requiring him to tackle the attacker, who then mysteriously disappears. Matt, Shelby, and Lee (Adina Porter), who already lived through the terror of the house, know the truth and very quickly everyone is coming around to the realities. Lee, her actress counterpart Monet (Angela Bassett), and Audrey stumble onto the bodies of Sidney and his assistants before Agnes attacks again, but this time Lee was ready, guns blazing.

After they escape the house to go for help, the ladies in the woods are kidnapped by the real Polk family and the scenes are right out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Matt wakes up next to Shelby and hypnotically walks down to the basement for a rendezvous with the witch (Lady Gaga), all of which is caught by Dominic. He retrieves Shelby from upstairs, who chases the witch away to save Matt. But then Matt confesses that he actually came back to the house for the witch because he’s in love with her”¦ and well”¦ let’s just say Shelby’s reaction was akin to Negan’s replacing Lucille with a crowbar. That was scream #1. As Dominic tries to calm her down, Agnes is outside ready to burn the house down when the Roanoke ghosts appear behind her, including the real-life Butcher, and well”¦ that was scream #2. You don’t expect to see Kathy Bates get her face cleaved in half!

Let’s recap this episode: There are multiple murders by a cleaver-carrying madwoman. Then there is the redneck cannibal torture family, the return of witch sex, and TWO main characters getting their heads caved in! Seriously, it was really funny that this episode premiered 4 days after the TWD, premiere because it felt as if Murphy and Falchuk watched that show and said, “Ha, you think THAT’S f*cked up, watch THIS!” In a week where The Walking Dead‘s Negan finally cracked his skulls, American Horror Story easily claims the title of sickest show on television. We know one character survives, the question remains, in the spirit of Texas Chainsaw’s tagline, “Who will survive and what will be left of them?”

American Horror Story: Roanoke returns next Wednesday at 10:00pm ET only on FX.
