The long-awaited 2017 film is an origins story for the famous DC superhero, who made her on-screen debut in this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, and will also be a part of the Justice League ensemble film coming out November 2017.
The new photo, which debuted at EW, shows Diana on the all-female island of Themyscira where she goes against her mother’s wishes and breaks into the armory to steal the “god killer,” a mythical Amazonian sword, before leaving to go to Europe to help humanity.
There’s also a previously released image from the film showing Diana and the immortal female warriors who trained her: her mother, Hippolyta, the Amazon Queen of Themyscira (Connie Nielsen); General Antiope (Robin Wright), Hippolyta’s sister and Diana’s aunt; and Menalippe, Antiope’s lieutenant (Lisa Loven Kongsli).
Wonder Woman will see young Diana stepping out on her own on the path that leads her away from her idyllic home and into the role of superhero to the world of man:
“This is her moment,” says director Patty Jenkins (Monster). “She’s heard all the terrible things about man’s land. But she’s also heard that mankind is in need and under duress. This is her great moment to make the decision to be the one to try and save them.”
Chris Pine (Star Trek) stars as Steve Trevor, the U.S. military fighter pilot and Diana’s eventual love interest, while Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead) plays Etta Candy, Steve Trevor’s secretary who becomes a friend to Diana.
Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017.
