Untitled ‘Star Wars’ Han Solo Movie Starts Production Today

Harrison Ford as Han Solo Image

Disney and Lucasfilm plan on releasing at least one Star Wars film every year. So far, the studio has delivered on that promise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016, and the newly titled Star Wars: The Last Jedi hitting theaters this year. For that promise to be fulfilled next year, Phil Lord and Chris Miller would need to start shooting the Untitled Han Solo Movie very soon.

Well, today, they announced that they have started production on the film. And the two gave it a very fitting production title.

Check it out below.

Miller posted the tweet with the caption “Han First Shot,” which is a nod to the Han shot first debate. He included an image of a clapperboard with the production title that read “Red Cup.”

For those that don’t know, that is in reference to red solo cups. You know, the ones you see at parties? You might also recognize it from a previous Tweet.

Other than that Untitled Han Solo Film will focus on the early days of Han Solo’s smuggling career, we don’t know much about it. Here’s what we do know, though. The film will have a very western feel to it, and not be like any of the Star Wars films we have seen so far. In fact, Arrival cinematographer Bradford Young will break some rules:

“We’re doing our own thing, that’s why we’re there. Phil and Chris are there to bring what they bring to their films, their very unique vision, their perspective on story and they asked me to come bring what I bring, and so just for that it won’t feel like any of the other films. And nobody at Lucasfilm is asking us to betray that, they’re saying “˜We’re in full support of what you do and we wanna make sure that we’re able to help you do it in the best way.’ It’s gonna feel like a Star Wars film, but we’re definitely gonna break some rules, and we’re encouraged to do that. Visually, narratively that’s a good mandate. They really are about, from what I’ve seen so far, supporting up and coming artists, artists who have a strong vision and voice and perspective, and they really wanna permeate the films with those kinds of voices. So it’s interesting, very interesting. Not what I thought it would be, that’s for sure. I’m pleasantly encouraged and pleasantly surprised.”

Alden Ehrenreich will play the smuggler, with Donald Glover playing the smooth Lando Calrissian. Woody Harrelson recently joined that cast as Han’s mentor. Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is in an unknown role.

Written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, The Untitled Han Solo Movie is tentatively scheduled for a May 25th, 2018 release.

  1. No offense to Alden but so many people including myself still believe Anthony Ingruber would be a much better choice. This is Ben Affleck batman all over again which by the way wasn’t that good.
