Nightwing DCEU

The DCEU universe is full of nods and Easter eggs that give us an idea of just how expansive the shared universe is. We saw Jason Todd’s Robin Suit in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which leads us to believe that Batman has been around long enough to have at least two heroes fight by his side.

Before Todd, there was Dick Grayson, who was the first Robin. While his character has not been acknowledge as of yet, it looks like there will be a movie about this character, and The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay could be who makes it. More on the story below.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, McKay is currently in negotiations to direct the film. Bill Dubuque (The Accountant, The Judge) wrote the script.

It’s still not clear how Grayson would fit into this very young superhero universe. As far as we know, Batman has been around long enough to give the title of Robin to another protege. In fact, it’s been so long that Joker killed Jason Todd, and left behind his sick and twisted graffiti signature all over Robin’s suit. Of course, as any Batman fan would tell you, Todd really isn’t dead. But it’s not clear if the DCEU will follow up on that story. Still, the prospect of having a Nightwing movie could explain why Batman brought a new Robin under his wing.

As for right now, the film does not have a release date. Nor does it have a shortlist of actors they would like to see play Nightwing.

For those who don’t know, Dick Grayson comes from a family of acrobats famously known as The Flying Graysons. When the patriarch refused to pay protection from the mob, they were subsequently killed. Leaving Dick an orphan. Bruce Wayne then took him in, and soon the youngest Grayson joined Batman in fighting crime. In the comics, Dick also took up the title of the Batman, whenever Bruce was indisposed or otherwise absent. There was also the little controversial matter of the character taking up the title towards the end of The Dark Knight Rises. Considering his connection to the character, we’ll have to assume that Ben Affleck will make some sort of appearance, just has he did for the last two DCEU films.

It’s not clear if and when the film could start production, with the studio still working on The Batman, The Flash, Cyborg, The Green Lantern Corps, Gotham City Sirens, Suicide Squad 2, Shazam!, and Justice League 2. Not to mention those films getting sequels if they are a hit. Aquaman is currently in production, with Wonder Woman and Justice League all set for release this year.

McKay has a huge background in animation, having been the director of The LEGO Batman Movie and the animation supervisor for The LEGO Movie. He also worked on shows like Moral Orel and Robot Chicken. So if he gets the job, it would be his first major live-action film.
