Last week on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, the Legends headed for the Apollo 13 mission because Nate’s (Nick Zano) grandfather, Commander Steel, hid a piece of the spear. Ray snuck into the mission and discovered that Thawne took out the 2 astronauts to get to the moon (where the piece was hidden). Thawne and Ray (Matt Letscher, Brandon Routh) had to work together to get back to Earth alive. Commander Steel sacrificed himself for the mission. Stein and Mick (Victor Garber, Dominic Purcell) sang to distract NASA.

Spoilers below.

DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow 2.15 “Fellowship Of The Spear” review: They are in France, 1916, smack in the middle of World War I. How did they get here? 72 hours earlier they are on their way to the Vanishing Point to confront the Legion of Doom. The spear calls to its other pieces.

Mick is having Snart (Wentworth Miller) flashbacks at the point where he died. “He blew himself up… for what?”

Jax (Franz Drameh) turns the spear container into a mound of jellybeans. Cool power. Thawne finally notices. “They’re not smart enough for this to be happening.” He screams.

The spear heals itself. Rip (Arthur Darvill) warns to be careful, because the spear calls to people, promising the person that they can remake the world to how they want it. Mick tries to set it on fire, and some Latin words appear: “Born of blood, undone by blood.” Nate wants it destroyed – the spear needs to be undone by Christ. Sara wants to go to the Crucification. Rip says there are some moments in time you never mess with at all, and he forbids it. Nate says there might be another way. J.R.R.Tolkien will know where a vial of Jesus’s blood is buried. He was in WWI so that’s why they ended up there.

Darhk is furious that Thawne lost their piece. Thawne thinks this is a good thing.

Sara: “Take the Backstreet Boys (Ray, Nate, and Rip – haha)…” Amaya is moved by the young dying soldiers. Mick is giving out bread when he sees Snart. Mick spills all to his vision of Snart, who keeps calling him a dog. He tells him to use the Spear of Destiny to bring him back, then punches him in the face.

Rip and Nate find an ill Tolkien. They cured him of typhoid fever. Rip tells him a long story of some travelers (Nate – “Fellowship if you will”).

The spear whispers, like the ring of Sauron.

Snart walks in and everyone can see him.

Darhk: “Well if that’s not an entrance line, I don’t know what is.” Snart was picked up out of the timeline. I don’t like that Mick and Snart are against each other.

They all gang up against Rory (except Amaya). Snart was right. She wants to wield the spear to get at the blood, which is in the middle of the deadliest battle of the war. She is voted down.

Rip gives a speech to the battlefield that clearly inspires Tolkien.

They find the vial of Christ’s blood. Snart and Darhk show up to take the spear, or everyone dies. Mick walks it over and joins his former partner.

The Legion of Doom (and Mick) grab hold of the spear and Merlyn reads from the owner’s manual. Looks like next week’s episode will be zanier than usual, as the rules have completely changed.

What can I say? Legends is just always quirky interesting fun, with famous figures in history thrown in. There’s no way the science and math and time aberrations really work out, but when you watch, you don’t even care. Sure, they are heroes. But what is fun is that their reactions and actions are exactly what I would do, given those situations.

I loved the Tolkien references, and the activeness of the Tolkien character as well.

Two more episodes!

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs 9:00pm ET on The CW.
