Netflix continues to become a dominant force in must see entertainment. This year amidst an unbelievable amount of new and fresh content, they released Santa Clarita Diet, a “biting” comedy about a real estate seller who get violently ill, and ends up a blood thirsty member of the undead. Netflix US & Canada just announced the show will get a second season coming in 2018.
More below.
Unlike the zombies on The Walking Dead, Sheila; the hilarious Drew Barrymore, maintains all normal aspects of her life; wife, mother, neighbor, you name it; just with a small change in diet. Helping her along is her husband Joel, played by a scene-stealing Timothy Olyphant. One minute the two are trying to sell a beautiful split level, the next Sheila is munching on the fingers of a pushy co-worker. Created by Victor Fresco (Better off Ted/My Name is Earl) and co-starring Liv Hewson, Skyler Gisondo, Richard T. Jones and Mary Elizabeth Ellis, the series is Netflix at its most binge-worthy. Each of the ten episodes run only 30 minutes and they maintain a perfect balance of over the top blood and gore with laugh out loud dialogue and moments.
The first season deals with Sheila’s new “condition” and how it impacts her, her family, and those around them. The main questions of what happened to her, and if it can be reversed are left ambiguous. Not to mention the obvious; the living dead require human bodies to eat and when those disappear, people ask questions. The second season will likely pick up right where we left off, with the Hammonds desperately searching for answers, and trying to avoid detection as the flesh loving family down the street.
Santa Clarita Diet season 1 is streaming on Netflix now.
