Back in 2014 came surprising word of a sequel to Jim Henson‘s 1986 feature Labyrinth. The sequel was quickly denied by sources, but no one ever knows if denials like that are because something is actually not happening or if word of it got out to the public before they were ready. A little over a year later the project surfaced again, this time with Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman, though she later said it was clickbait.
Now comes word of a new attempt. It’s being reported that the director behind 2013’s Evil Dead and last year’s Don’t Breathe, Fede Alvarez, has come on board to write and direct the Labyrinth sequel.
The report comes from Deadline, who says Alvarez will direct and also co-write the story with Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent), who will pen the screenplay once a story is worked out.
The movie might end up being more of a spinoff than a sequel. It’s made clear that it is not a remake, but a new story set within the world created in Henson’s original movie, which sounds like a smart move.
Unlike previous reports of a new Labyrinth movie, this time it’s been confirmed by the studio. The movie is a co-production between The Jim Henson Company and TriStar Pictures, with Henson Company’s Lisa Henson producing and Nicole Brown overseeing for TriStar.
Alvarez also released a statement, saying:
“Labyrinth is one of the seminal movies from my childhood that made me fall in love with filmmaking. I couldn’t be more thrilled to expand on Jim Henson’s mesmerizing universe and take a new generation of moviegoers back into the Labyrinth.”
Before Alvarez gets to work on this new Labyrinth project, however, he has another movie to make first.
He’s set to direct The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the follow-up to David Fincher’s remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which he also wrote with Basu. That movie is currently casting with plans to begin filming this fall.
