Cars 3 Header Image

Cars may not be as universally loved as its fellow Pixar films, but like all Pixar films, it has plenty of heart. Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) has been steering the franchise’s success for the last two films, where he has discovered the true meaning of humility and friendship.

But now it’s time for him to suffer a very critical loss and go back to basics to discover that some careers don’t last forever, but it’s the legacy that you leave behind that truly matters. Check out the latest trailer for Cars 3 below.

As the trailer suggests, Lightning is at the height of his racing career. But there is a major downside to that as well. Now he’ll be entering a point where racing isn’t what it used to be. After being showered with all kinds of endorsements for all those wins, Lightning comes to realize that with every loss, he damages his legacy. So when a sleek hotshot new racer named Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) comes to take some of that thunder away, and soon, Lightning is not only losing his edge but fame as well. So in an attempt to reclaim what was once his, Lightning tries to be Storm during a major race, only to suffer a tragic crash.

Of course, Lightning’s loss forces him to look deep within and seek help from his new trainer Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo) who will help him back on his wheels and race once more.

If anything, the film looks like its going back to its roots. It’s not so much like the first film where Lightning learns a lesson in humility. But Cars 3 has Lightning rediscover his passion for racing. He’s already secured all those endorsements, but now he has to learn that as he gets older, a new generation of faster cars will eventually pass him by. So it’s up to him to decide when to stop chasing for that checkered flag.

Cars 3 also features the voices of Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin, Jenifer Lewis, John Ratzenberger, Lloyd Sherr, Michael Wallis, Paul Dooley, Kerry Washington, Nathan Fillion and Lea DeLaria.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez (voice of Cristela Alonzo), with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

Cars 3 opens in theaters on June 16, 2017
