It’s being reported that a live-action Judge Dredd TV series, titled Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, is being developed by IM Global Television and Rebellion.

Set in a future where severe overpopulation has led to a massive increase in crime, law enforcers known as Judges, who possess the ability to legally act as judge, jury, and executioner as they see fit, are tasked with trying to maintain order. The show is aiming to be an ensemble drama about a group of Judges dealing with the many challenges their job comes with.

You can read more on Judge Dredd: Mega-City One and see an early poster below.

Rebellion is a video game developer and publisher perhaps best known for their Sniper Elite game series. In the year 2000 they acquired the comic Judge Dredd originated in back in 1977, the weekly sci-fi anthology 2000 AD.

Of the announcement, Rebellion’s founders Jason Kingsley and Chris Kingsley said in a joint statement:

“We’re very excited to be beginning the journey to get more of Judge Dredd’s Mega-City One on the television screen. Thanks to the legions of fans who have kept up pressure on social media, and a lot of background work and enthusiasm, we aim to make a big budget production that will satisfy both our vast comics audience and the even greater general screen-watching public.”

The Kingsley brothers were executive producers on the 2012 movie adaptation Dredd starring Karl Urban as the title character, and will have the same role with this new series as well. The 2012 movie was the second film adaptation, following 1995’s Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone. IM Global CEO Stuart Ford also executive produced Dredd and will do the same for Mega-City One.

IM Global Television president and fellow executive producer Mark Stern said:

“This is one of those seminal sci-fi properties that seems to only become and more relevant with age. Not only is it a rich world with biting social commentary, but it’s also fun as hell! As a fan of the comics and both films, it’s a dream come true to be able to work with Jason and Chris in adapting this for television.”

Stern was formerly the president of original content over at Syfy and helped develop series like Battlestar Galactica, Helix, and Defiance.

Judge Dredd: Mega-City One is only in the early stages of development at the moment, so it’s not known yet when we might see it, where it might air, or who might star.

As an added bonus, you can also find a video below of Jason Kingsley and producer Brian Jenkins talking about the announcement.
