‘Uncharted’ Movie: New Spider-Man Tom Holland Cast As Nathan Drake

Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Sony has finally found someone to play Nathan Drake in their long-in-development movie based on the Uncharted video game series, and it is not someone you were expecting.

It would appear that the studio is quite high on the star of their latest reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, Tom Holland, as the actor has become the latest actor attached to play Drake. Why they chose such a young actor for the role makes a little more sense when you see the reason, though I’m not very confident that it will make fans of the games feel better about the casting or the direction the movie is now moving in.

An Uncharted movie has been in the works for years. Various directors and writers have been attached. Some potential stars have been mentioned. But nothing has materialized yet. According to the report, after seeing the latest cut of the new Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony Pictures head Tom Rothman was inspired to re-work Uncharted.

Now, instead of the movie being about the Nathan Drake everyone who’s played the games is most familiar with, it will be a prequel about tiny Nathan Drake as he’s being shaped into the eventual treasure hunter we all know and love. The movie will be inspired in part by the portion of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception in which you play as a young Drake around the time he first meets Sully.

The latest draft of the screenplay was penned by The Grey, Smokin’ Aces, and the upcoming remake of The Raid director Joe Carnahan, but given the new approach Sony will now have to bring in a new writer to start from scratch.

Directing the movie is Shawn Levy, whose previous credits include episodes of Stranger Things, the Night at the Museum movies, Cheaper by the Dozen, The Pink Panther (2006), Real Steel, and The Internship.

A new release date for the movie has not yet been set.
