It’s very easy to get excited for a film like Wonder Woman, especially with the positive reception it has been getting as of late. And the same goes for Justice League, the mega-ensemble featuring some of the greatest DC heroes of all time. But since its production start date announcement, we know next to nothing about Aquaman. He’s one of the few characters to be introduced in Justice League, but getting his own standalone feature after it.
However, unlike Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman affecting the events of Justice League, Aquaman will take place after Justice League. Find out more on this story below.
Speaking to CinemaBlend about the film’s chronology, Wonder Woman producer Charles Roven explained why Aquaman is set after Justice League:
“Aquaman will make reference [to Justice League]. There will be some reference of something that preceded Aquaman that will be in Aquaman. I believe that is the intention. James [Wan] definitely knows where he’s going with [Aquaman], and that movie takes place in a world where Justice League happened, and Man of Steel happened, and Wonder Woman obviously takes place before Man of Steel “” except for the bookends we have. So that’s where we have the most ability to freeform. We could do a movie that takes place after Justice League, we can do a movie that takes place after Batman v Superman”¦ well not really. You can’t do a movie in between Batman v Superman and Justice League, but we can do movies that take place after Justice League and we can do movies that precede Justice League.”
So it sounds a lot like Roven is talking about making the story fit within the universe they are creating. Though it is part of a bigger picture, Roven assures us that this is still a James Wan film. Which is somewhat relieving considering all of the trouble films prior to Wonder Woman have been getting due to studio interference. That being said, it should be fun to see if these post-Justice League films follow a similar path to that of the MCU films post-Avengers. How much will be referenced, and will the events of Aquaman or The Flash have an effect on succeeding films? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Aquaman stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Patrick Wilson, and Nicole Kidman.
Here’s the brief plot synopsis:
An icon for over 75 years, Aquaman is known by fans of DC Comics as the ruler of Atlantis but committed to protecting the entire globe, both land and sea.
Aquaman is set for a 2018 release.
