The Conjuring universe is quickly becoming terrifying as it expands. Since its release, the movie has spawned off at least one sequel and multiple spinoffs, some of which got a sequel themselves. Now get ready for the newest spinoff.
According to new reports, Warner Bros. is working on their fourth spinoff based on the collection of creatures and possessed items seen in the Conjuring films. The Crooked Man, based on the man of the same name seen in The Conjuring 2, is that fourth spinoff. Check out more about this story below.
The Hollywood Reporter says Mike Van Waes has been tapped to write the screenplay. Waes may be a relative unknown and has only the untitled Wizard of Oz horror project on his resume. James Wan, who directed both Conjuring films, and series producer Peter Safran will act as producers on the film.
For those who may not be familiar with who the Crooked Man is, the character is based on an old English nursery rhyme:
There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile. /He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile. /He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse. /And they all lived together in a little-crooked house.
In The Conjuring 2, the Crooked Man was one of the possessed items taking the form of a zoetrope, where it was placed alongside the Annabelle doll and a music box. But, as mentioned above, this isn’t be the first time the franchise spawned a spinoff. In addition to the two Annabelle films, there will also be The Nun, a film about the demon nun that was seen in The Conjuring 2.
It should be interesting to see what kind of approach the film takes to bring the Crooked Man to the big screen. Both Conjuring films had a sense of dread and spine-tingling chills as it used the real-life stories of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators that inspired the two films. Because there’s no real history behind the possessed items that they have kept, it gives some sense of creative freedom to the writers and directors to create its origins. So the film might just end up being a straightforward horror film.
So far there is no director or release date. But Annabelle: Creation opens in theaters this year, with The Nun hitting theaters next year. Which means that we could see The Crooked Man be released in 2019. But that is pure speculation. We’ll keep you up to date should any new developments come in.
