We found out just last month that Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, and Inception star Tom Hardy was set to star in the R-rated Spider-Man spinoff Venom with Zombieland and Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer behind the camera.
Going with the R-rating—with confidence gained from the successful releases of Deadpool and Logan—is a great start. Now it looks like another step in the right direction has been taken. There was a rumor a few years back (when the movie was going to be co-written and directed by The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman) that the movie could feature none other than Carnage, and it appears that will be the case.
In a recent article by The Hollywood Reporter, they state that Carnage will indeed be a villain in the new Venom movie. Apart from that, nothing more is known. The news is mentioned in passing as part of a much larger piece on Spider-Man and Sony sharing the character with Marvel.
The only other interesting bit of news hidden in the post relates to other Spider-Man spinoffs. We already know about the Silver Sable and Black Cat project titled Black and Silver, but THR says that spinoffs focusing on Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio are being developed as well. This is all part of Sony’s new plan, says the report, to build their cinematic universe slowly instead introducing multiple characters at once in a movie like the previously planned Sinister Six, which is now on the shelf.
It’s also noted that Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man in Sony’s latest reboot of the franchise, Spider-Man: Homecoming, is only currently signed for that movie plus a second and third installment if they move forward with them. This is in addition to appearing as the character in Marvel projects like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, which is filming right now. That said, the hope is to also bring him in for some of the spinoffs as well. So don’t rule out an appearance in Venom just yet.

Now, with Tom Hardy set for the title role, who would you like to see bring Cletus Kasady/Carnage to life?
Venom is currently scheduled to be released on October 5, 2018.
