Early in the AM hours, Apollo Gauntlet joined the parade of lunacy that is Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Adult Swim started back in 2001 and quickly became a cult hit with its briskly paced, sarcastic, and crude series like Home Movies, Harvey Birdman, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Apollo Gauntlet, created by Myles Langlois, is a perfect fit for Adult Swim with its old fashioned style of animation and nearly unending stream of consciousness style puns, one-liners, and pop culture references.

More below.

Apollo is Canadian police officer Paul Cassidy (played by Langlois), who we meet strapped to a chair by mad scientist, Doctor Benign… I don’t why, but the name Doctor Benign (James Urbaniak) had me rolling. Benign likes sending people to random universes and examining the results. Things go badly when he turns a man into a pickle monster resulting in the three being transported to a medieval times-esque Earthlike universe.

Paul speaks almost entirely in references, some flew way over my head, but many I got and chuckled at. I like his “Brundlefly” remark while trapped in Benign’s lab. And at one point he engages in a conversation to the lyrics of Radiohead’s “Creep.” Somehow later, he ends up finding a Flash Gordon-looking super suit complete with magical gauntlets that speak to him and have a psychic connection that allows them to understand his jokes… until he tells one, and, well, nothing.

Apollo Gauntlet is really funny, and if you’re the type that speaks to friends and family in movie quotes and song lyrics and uses trivial entertainment-based knowledge as part of your daily lexicon, then this show is right up your alley. It also has one of the catchiest and funniest theme songs you’ll hear. It’s like watching Johnny Quest or Scooby-Doo written by a group of friends having soup and coffee in a diner at 1AM on a work night.

Apollo Gauntlet is on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim from 12:15 – 12:30 AM on Sunday nights and you can stream the entire season 1 here.

Inspired by He-Man, Mystery Science Theater3000 and the work of David Lynch, self-taught, independent Canadian animator Myles Langlois createdApollo Gauntlet, a quarter-hour animated adventure comedy series set in a futuristic medieval society. The series centers around Paul Cassidy, an ordinary cop on Earth, but when the evil Dr. Benign transports him to another world, he becomes a new kind of hero. With the help of a magical suit and a set of talking gauntlets, he’s able to fight crime exactly the way he wants…and he’ll do it as APOLLO GAUNTLET!
