I sure hope you like the Joker and Harley Quinn, geeks. Because a whole lot of them are incoming. We first saw the Batman villains together in Suicide Squad, played by Jared Leto and Margot Robbie. The actors will also be reprising the roles in the upcoming Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens. On top of all of that, we just found out two days ago that a Joker origins movie separate from the established DC extended universe is being developed. That project, however, will cast someone new to play the diabolical prankster.
Now comes word of a new project in the works. The movie, which doesn’t have a title yet, will focus on the Joker and Harley Quinn characters, with Leto and Robbie due to play them here as well.
Those who are fans of the characters will no doubt be excited for the movie, which is described as “an insane and twisted love story” and “When Harry Met Sally on benzedrine.”
And though the project has just been announced, it sounds like it’s on a fairly fast track. The Suicide Squad sequel is expected to come first, but then it’s said that the Joker and Harley Quinn project will be next, before Gotham City Sirens and the Joker origins movie. This is in part due to Warner Brothers having holding agreements in place with the actors.
The movie also has writers and directors lined up. The report says that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are in final negotiations to both write and direct the Joker and Harley Quinn project.
Ficarra and Requa previously directed I Love You Phillip Morris, Crazy Stupid Love, Focus, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, with the latter two starring Robbie, and worked on the screenplays for Focus and Phillip Morris, as well as Cats & Dogs, Bad Santa and its sequel, Bad News Bears (2005), and Disney’s Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson. Interestingly enough, Jungle Cruise is set to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who dropped out of directing Suicide Squad 2 take on the Disney gig. Ficarra and Requa are also executive producers and directors on the TV series This Is Us.
The Joker and Harley Quinn movie will reportedly be part of Warner Brothers’ DCEU, and not one of the separate DC titles like the aforementioned Joker origins flick.
