Laura Dern In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

As with every sequel, there must be new additions to keep the story moving forward. That is no different with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which not only has new characters but also a new director in Rian Johnson. These new characters will aid or hinder each other in different ways whether it’s the First Order making a power move to annihilate the Resistance or some infighting within the Resistance. Either way, it makes for some great drama. And that is all led by Johnson.

Geeks of Doom, along with fellow members of the press, got to sit down with Johnson, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran, to hear what they had to say about being the new kids on the block. Check out what they had to say below.

Johnson compared being the new person to the franchise as the boyfriend you bring home during Thanksgiving. And being the new boss, there is some similarities to him and Dern’s Admiral Holdo, who happens to be a major figure in the Resistance. “I would be thrilled if there was some of me in her. Laura Dern could represent any part of me and I would be thrilled,” Johnson said. “It’s a dream to just to get to work with her. The character that she plays, in all its glorious purple-haired wonder, we were really able to dig in and do some really exciting and fun stuff.”

Talking directly to the actress, Johnson said “The moments on set where suddenly you would catch my eye and say ‘This feels like we are making an independent film.’ Those were the moments I was like ‘Yeah, it kinda does.’ I think it feels really good, and that is the kind of intimacy of the process I think.”

Tran couldn’t stop from crying because being a part of a press conference for a film that is a part of iconic cinema was so weird and different for her. Even on set, while she had professional composure, she couldn’t help but geek out. “You have to find a way to just do the work and kind of block everything out,” Tran said. “But when C-3PO walks out you’re all, gaah. You’re constantly figuring out how can I figure out how to work in this environment, and then you’re like, but also this is awesome. So it’s kind of a balance.” I can’t say I blame her. I mean, it’s hard not to geek out when you are working on a set full of Star Wars characters, especially if it’s a really big deal like Finn.

Dern added “The intimacy of discovering each character’s conflict, which is just extraordinary given the enormity of the cast, that he gave us that and the experience in the workplace. It was shocking. Oscar and I always talked about how stunned we were that we were in a massive environment and it felt like we were making an indie movie, and Rian was encouraging us to try things and explore our characters and the duality of the light and the dark within characters. The movie speaks to so beautifully not just the alternative universes that lies within, which seems to be the place that George Lucas first started the mythology, that and it is just so brilliant.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters on December 15, 2017. Click right here for more, including trailers and more from the film’s press junket coming soon.
