Marvel has hired Jac Schaeffer to write the screenplay for Black Widow, a standalone movie for the character played by Scarlett Johansson in The Avengers and sequels Age of Ultron and the upcoming Infinity War, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and sequel Captain America: Civil War, and more.
A standalone movie for Johansson’s character has been wanted by many for a long time now, but nothing has ever materialized. Marvel confirmed they were developing the project back in 2014, but this is the first real progress toward finally putting together a movie since then.
Nothing else is known at the moment about Black Widow or what story it will tell, only that the movie is in early development, Schaeffer is now penning the screenplay, and Johansson is expected to return to star. The actress has shared some thoughts on what the movie could be about in the past, saying:
“I would like for it to happen under the right circumstances. I think there’s a lot of opportunities to mine that story line. She’s got a really rich origins story. There’s a lot of places you can go “” you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There’s all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she’s part of.”
Schaeffer previously wrote, directed, and produced the 2009 movie TiMER. She also penned the screenplays for the recent Frozen spinoff Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, and the upcoming Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake Nasty Women starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. Hathaway is attached to The Shower as well, which is a Black List script written by Schaeffer.
