‘Life Itself’ Trailer: ‘This Is Us’ Creator Dan Fogelman Brings His Tearjerking Storytelling To The Big Screen

Life Itself

Last night, everyone shed more than a few tears at the season finale of Dan Fogelman‘s This is Us. But Fogelman is much more than a showrunner. He’s also a filmmaker, and now he will bring us to tears once more in Life Itself.

Not to be confused with the Roger Ebert documentary of the same name, Life Itself is a multi-generational film that tells the story of how love and one shared event can connect us all. It stars Olivia Wilde, Oscar Isaac, Mandy Patinkin, Laia Costa, Annette Bening, and Antonio Banderas. Amazon Studios ha released a teaser trailer for the film, which you can find below.

The film’s premise is not too far off from Fogelman’s show This is Us. We see how the idea of love can connect us all. But what is that one event that connects them together? Well, judging by the brief appearance of shattered glass slowly falling in the air, it looks like a tragic accident will shift the family dynamics from one happy family to a tragic one.

However, there will be more depth to it than that, at least I hope.

Life Itself is Fogelman’s second directorial effort. His first was Danny Collins starring Al Pacino. Fogelman has also spent some time writing scripts for Disney animated features like Bolt and Tangled, and headed up north to write the scripts for the first two Cars films. He also wrote the script for Crazy Stupid Love, so as you can see, the multi-connectiveness is a bit of a recurring theme.

So it should be interesting to see how Life Itself manages to separate itself from This is Us. But even if it doesn’t, we can always know that Fogelman’s material will probably have us crying by the time the end credits start rolling.

Here’s the very brief plot synopsis:

Life Itself centers on a couple (Oscar Isaac and Olivia Wilde) that lead a multi generational love story spanning both decades and continents, from the streets of New York to the Spanish countryside, and are all connected by a single event.

Life Itself is scheduled to open in theaters on September 21, 2018.
