Blackhawk Header

It was only a matter of time before a legendary director such as Steven Spielberg became involved in a superhero epic. However, which side he would go to was unclear.

Now we know. According to new reports Spielberg, along with his Amblin Entertainment, are set to produce Blackhawk, a World War II title that features DC characters. The film is also being developed for Spielberg to direct. This is the second major collaboration between the two since Ready Player One. More on the story below.

David Koepp, who has written many of Spielberg’s films, will pen the script. Koepp wrote Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Of the announcement, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said:

“We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing “˜Blackhawk’ to movie audiences worldwide.”

Spielberg also released a statement, saying:

“It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring “˜Ready Player One’ to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on “˜Blackhawk.'”

Blackhawk tells the story of a squadron of seven World War II pilots led by a man named Blackhawk. Operating on Blackhawk Island, the squad flew Grumman XF5F Skyrocket planes to fight tyranny. While they aren’t the most recognizable names standing next to other DC heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, the group has made some appearances in the Justice League Unlimited animated series.

Spielberg is currently hard at work getting ready for Indiana Jones 5, which will reunite him with Harrison Ford, who will reprise the title character one last time. The film is due out in theaters in 2020. He will then move on to a reimagining of West Side Story. Currently, Ready Player One has grossed over $470 million worldwide, and has helped push the director’s box office tally well over $10 billion.

While Spielberg works on the two aforementioned films to work on, Variety says WB will use that time to fully develop the project. Based on the material, Blackhawk is right in Spielberg’s wheelhouse.
