Following its premiere at CinemaCon on Monday (and an eight-second clip leaked online), Sony Pictures Entertainment has released the second trailer for their upcoming Spider-Man spin-off Venom.
Watch it in glorious high-definition and see a new poster for the movie here below.
The first trailer released in February was underwhelming and didn’t give us a hint of the story or a single glimpse of the titular character in action. I can’t say that about the new trailer, which introduces us to Tom Hardy‘s streetwise journalist Eddie Brock and wastes no time setting up the plot machinations that lead to his fateful union with the black alien “symbiote” that transforms him into the anti-hero Venom.
The trailer packs in plenty of ridiculous action scenes, augmented by decent CGI, and gives Hardy and co-stars Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, and Jenny Slate bits of narrative exposition in place of character development.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, and Kelly Marcel, Venom looks to be exactly what you might expect from a dark superhero flick and not much more, but I hope I’m wrong.
One thing’s for sure; they have the look and sound of the character down cold. If the rest of the movie lives up to the presentation of one of Spider-Man’s fiercest foes, it might really be something.
Venom opens on October 5, 2018.
