Walt Disney Studios has announced the start of production for The One and Only Ivan. The film, which will be directed by Thea Sharrock (Me Before You), is an adaptation of Katherine Applegate‘s award-winning children’s book.
And like most of Disney’s film productions, there is a large all-star ensemble cast. This time, Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Godzilla) takes the lead, and he will be joined by Angelina Jolie (Girl Interrupted, Maleficent), who is also producing, Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Moon), Danny DeVito (Dumbo, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Helen Mirren (Winchester, The Queen). Check out the full cast, plus more info on the film, below.
THR says The One and Only Ivan will also feature the talents of Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project), Ramon Rodriquez (Iron Fist, The Defenders), Ariana Greenblatt (A Bad Moms Christmas), Indira Varma (Game of Thrones, Exodus: Gods and Kings), and Eleanor Matsuura (Wonder Woman, Sherlock).
Here’s more about the film:
Based on the true story of a uniquely-talented gorilla and the other animals who share a communal habitat at a suburban shopping mall, “The One and Only Ivan” is an unforgettable tale about the beauty of friendship, the power of visualization and the significance of the place we call home. Applegate’s book, a #1 New York Times’ bestseller, has won numerous awards, including the Newberry Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children in 2013.
The One and Only Ivan will be a live-action and animation hybrid. The use of “the power of visualization” and the use of voice roles should have been a dead giveaway. That being said, there is an enormous amount of star power in this film. The cast alone is very exciting.
School of Rock writer Mike White penned the script.
No word yet on when The One and Only Ivan could be released, but we will keep a look out for when it is announced.
