Marvel Studios’ ‘Black Widow’ Director Shortlist Narrowed Down To Three

Black Widow Avengers Age Of Ultron Header

Things are progressing quickly for the long-awaited Black Widow standalone film. Earlier this year, Marvel Studios brought in Jac Schaeffer (TiMER, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure) to pen the script. This was followed by meetings with Deniz Gamze Erguven (the Turkish movie Mustang), Chloe Zhao (The Rider), and Amma Asante (A United Kingdom) as potential directors.

Now it looks like Marvel has narrowed it down to three. According to new reports, Cate Shortland (Lore, Berlin Syndrome), Maggie Betts (Novitiate), and Asante are the most likely candidates. More on the story below.

According to Deadline Marvel Studios has narrowed down the shortlist from a field of 49, and they’re hearing that Shortland appears to be the favorite though the other two are still very much in the running.

Fans have been calling for a Black Widow movie ever since the character made her debut in Iron Man 2 in 2010. Since then, the standalone film has been pushed to the side for other films led by male superheroes. Marvel has been falling behind in their female-led superhero films as of late. Their first will be Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson, which is due to hit theaters early next year. However, a Black Widow film would be the first time that a female director has helmed a Marvel Studios film alone. Captain Marvel is being directed by the team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

It’s not a huge surprise that Marvel is looking into someone like Shortland. She’d follow a long list of non-household names that have directed a Marvel film. Most, if not all, have gone on to be mega box office hits for the studio. Take a look at Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther and Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. The former’s film is a phenomenon and the latter’s film changed the character for the better. And that was just some of their more recent films.

Obviously, we don’t know what Black Widow would be about, but Johansson does have a few ideas. Here’s what she had to say about the possibility of releasing a standalone:

“I would like for it to happen under the right circumstances. I think there’s a lot of opportunities to mine that story line. She’s got a really rich origins story. There’s a lot of places you can go “” you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There’s all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she’s part of.”

So it looks like a Black Widow film may actually happen. This comes at a time where fans are looking for more gender diversity within the genre. So we will just have to wait and see if this film ends up happening. And we all hope that it does.
