Lucasfilm Says ‘Star Wars’ Spinoffs Are Not On Hold As Rumored
space

Alden Ehrenreich is Han Solo and Joonas Suotamo is Chewbacca in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

Last week there was a report from Collider that said the Star Wars spinoffs were being put on hold. The news came after Solo: A Star Wars Story‘s reported inability to meet certain box office expectations. As a result, this put the multiple planned spinoffs on pause. But plans for The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s new trilogy and the series of movies from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were to continue to be developed.

However, it appears now that the spinoffs are back on, or merely they were never actually put on hold. A new report says Lucasfilm is still actively developing anthology films for the Star Wars universe. This includes films for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett. More on the story here below.

According to ABC, Lucasfilm says that the spinoffs (announced or otherwise) are still in development:

…Lucasfilm told ABC News there are still “multiple” Star Wars films currently in development that have not been officially announced. Those projects are moving forward separate from an already-announced “Star Wars” trilogy being overseen by “The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson and another series of movies from “Game of Thrones” producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

So if these spinoffs are still on, that means we still could get an Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett film. The former, which would focus on the legendary Jedi Knight, is still in development and would be directed by Stephen Daldry, who has been nominated for three Academy Awards for his work directing 2000’s Billy Elliot, 2002’s The Hours, and 2008’s The Reader. He is currently in early negotiations for the job.

The latter, would have centered on the fan-favorite bounty hunter. While he may have had very little screen time throughout the franchise, his following is so big that he deserved his own film. Logan director James Mangold has signed on to write and direct the film.

Sure, news travels at a fast pace, and its even harder to know what is real and fake without getting any sort of confirmation. So Disney and Lucasfilm may be trying to get ahead of this before it gets worse. Then again, Collider, who is highly reliable, may have gotten some wrong information. But it could be a combination of both.

Whatever the case may be, we will be sure to keep you up to date on any new developments.

Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled to be released on December 20, 2019.
