Annabelle, that creepy doll that first appeared in The Conjuring, refuses to be put on the shelf. After that first film and two successful spinoffs, New Line Cinema and WB announced that they will be releasing Annabelle 3, with IT and The Nun writer Gary Dauberman lined up to direct the film.
Now we are learning more about what the expect from the terrifying sequel. During a special ScareDiego panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, Dauberman and Annabelle producer James Wan spoke about the upcoming film, with Wan saying that it will be like Night at the Museum but with Annabelle. Find our more about the story, below.
EW was on hand to preview New Line’s slate, which also gave an early look at The Nun, opening in theaters on September 7, 2018, and The Curse of La Llorona, which opens on April 19, 2019.
Speaking to members of the audience, Dauberman said that he was still finalizing the script for Annabelle 3. But it is the film’s new setting that could make things go bump in the night. The doll won’t be with a new owner, instead, it will be back with the Warrens. Only thing is, it’s going to “wreak havoc” on their house full of haunted and possessed items. Dauberman has been a key player in The Conjuring Universe, having penned other Conjuring films like the first Conjuring and Annabelle: Creation.
Here’s what he had to say:
“I’m still finalizing the script, but it really picks up with the Warrens bringing Annabelle to the place where it can really no longer wreak havoc, which is their artifact room. But, of course, it turns out she can also wreak havoc there. And she really awakens the evil within that room and they target the Warrens’ 10-year-old daughter, Judy. So, that’s the set-up.”
Indeed, it looks like the Warrens will be out of the picture for this one. However, their child will play a huge role in the film, as she will now be the target of their evil. It wouldn’t be the first time that the Warrens’ daughter has been attacked or haunted by them, either. But now, she will have to endure it for an entire film rather than just one scene.
Here’s what Wan had to say:
“Annabelle basically activates all the other haunted artifacts in that room. So, it’s basically A Night at the Museum, with Annabelle!”
Night at the Museum was childish fun, but to inject some scares from the Conjuring franchise, it could bring a new twist to that universe. We’ll keep you posted on any new Annabelle 3 developments when they come in.
