Henry Cavill to Play Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's The Witcher

Last year we found out that Netflix was developing a series based on The Witcher, author Andrzej Sapkowski‘s popular fantasy book series that’s already been adapted into a hit video game franchise.

Now Netflix has announced a star for the series. Henry Cavill, who’s best known for playing Superman in DC Extended Universe titles Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, is set to lead the cast of The Witcher as Geralt of Rivia.

Geralt, also known as the White Wolf, is a witcher—someone who undergoes extensive mental, physical, and magical training as well as genetic modification from a young age, making them a mutant with superhuman abilities they often use to work as monster hunters for hire.

Here’s a description of Netflix’s take on The Witcher:

Based on the best-selling fantasy series, The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

Netflix has also announced a showrunner and directors for the series.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich—a writer and executive producer on Marvel’s Netflix series Daredevil and The Defenders, as well as a writer and executive producer on Power and a writer on The West Wing—will handle showrunner and executive producer duties.

The first season will consist of eight episodes. Four of those episodes including the first episode will be directed by Alik Sakharov, who also executive produces. Sakharov previously directed episodes of Game of Thrones, Rome, Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, The Americans, Marco Polo, Black Sails, Counterpart, Ozark, House of Cards, and more.

Directing two episodes each is Alex Garcia Lopez, whose previous credits include Utopia, Misfits, Fear the Walking Dead, The Exorcist, The Punisher, Luke Cage, Cloak & Dagger, and Daredevil, and Charlotte Brändström, whose credits include Arrow, Grey’s Anatomy, Outlander, Madam Secretary, Colony, and Counterpart.

Cavill has also starred in The Tudors, Immortals, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and most recently Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

No release window for The Witcher has been announced yet.
