‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal and Dan Gilroy Team Up For Emotionally Draining Satirical Thriller

Velvet Buzzsaw

Back in 2014, Jake Gyllenhaal and Dan Gilroy teamed up for the dark news-chasing thriller Nightcrawler. The Academy Award nominated actor provided one of the best performances of his career in Gilroy’s directorial debut.

Now they have reunited for Velvet Buzzsaw, a satirical film that takes on the world of contemporary art, and joining them is their Nightcrawler co-star Rene Russo. A trailer for the film has been released and you can check it out below.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

In the cutthroat world of fine-art trading and representation, up-and-coming agent Josephina (Zawe Ashton) stumbles across a secret weapon: hundreds of dazzling paintings left behind after an elderly tenant in her building dies. Ignoring the instructions the clandestine artist left to destroy his work, she promptly starts circulating the paintings, which soon attract the attention of the heavy hitters around her””including her boss Rhodora (Rene Russo), art critic (and Josephina’s sometime lover) Morf (Jake Gyllenhaal), and competing collectors, managers, and curators like Bryson (Billy Magnussen) and Gretchen (Toni Collette). Yet as the deceased artist’s portraits gain posthumous acclaim, they also awaken something imperceptible and sinister that threatens to punish those who have profited from his work.

Yes, scary things are happening to everyone who is connected to these paintings, but its pretty clear that Gyllenhaal will be the center of focus in the film. It’s fun to see him play such a role of the art-obsessed critic who suddenly realizes that these paintings are alive and that anyone who is in possession of them should box them up. But that’s when other creepy things start happening which makes the film even more frightening. Even scarier is the thought of how far people will go to gain popularity on social media.

As the trailer says, Velvet Buzzsaw will make its official debut at the Sundance Film Festival later this month, before making its streaming debut on Netflix on February 1, 2019.

Fair warning: what appear to be some fairly significant spoilers are shown in this trailer. We won’t know for sure just how significant they are until we see the movie, but if you avoid such things like the plague you may want to skip the trailer or just watch part of it to be safe.
