Patty Jenkins Directs Wonder Woman

Director Patty Jenkins‘ sequel Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot is easily one of the most anticipated films of next year. The sequel is apparently so massive that it had to be pushed back from its November 2019 release all the way to summer 2020. But it is never too early to talk about the inevitable third installment of the franchise.

Given its success and the worldwide appeal the character has, it would be a huge surprise if there isn’t a Wonder Woman 3. And Jenkins isn’t exactly shy to talk about what we could see in it. Nor is she afraid to talk about fan requests for her to direct a Justice League film. More on all of that below.

While promoting the TNT limited series I Am the Night, Jenkins spoke about the untitled Wonder Woman 3, telling The Hollywood Reporter that it wouldn’t be set in the past. That is somewhat of a sidestep for the franchise. The first was set during World War I, with Wonder Woman 1984 being set at the height of the Cold War. Whether or not war is the recurring theme in the franchise remains to be seen. But here is what Jenkins had to say about why she isn’t going to revisit the past in the third film:

I’m not set, but I’m not doing another period piece.

It’s definitely one of the things we talked about. I’m not planning to put it in the past again, because where are you going to go? You have to go forward. It’s definitely a contemporary story. That’s all I can say. Where we put it and how that gets figured out, I haven’t totally nailed down.”

That seems to make a lot of sense. The director also spoke to Vanity Fair about Wonder Woman’s trajectory. Here’s what she told them:

“I have pretty clear plans for Wonder Woman 3. Whether I [direct] it or not, I see how her arc should end in my incarnation of Wonder Woman. I have great passion for that.”

Jenkins seems to hint at the fact that she is not signed on for a third Wonder Woman. However, if she does return, she would like the bring closure to her cinematic character on her own terms. And she has certainly earned that right, having proven to WB that she can bring them a hit.

Of course, having that success under her belt fans have called for Jenkins to direct a Justice League film. Unfortunately, directing an ensemble superhero film is something that she isn’t interested in, at least for now:

“The Justice League movie, I find those movies to be extremely challenging. I think they are fantastic when they are well done. But taking on all of those characters at the same time in the timeline … I sort of hope that we don’t do a Justice League movie for a little while, because I’m excited to see all of their movies. I want to see Aquaman 2, I want to see Flash. Never say never, but I think everyone should have their moment to shine.”

So she is open to the possibility of directing Justice League, which is great. However, WB and DC will need to work out some of their issues with key members of the cast. It’s still very unclear if Henry Cavill is Superman. The actor posted a very vague video of himself wearing a Kryptonian bodybuilding shirt while holding up a Superman toy in his image. And it’s even more unclear if Ben Affleck is still Batman. That being said, maybe she is right, and we need to build around the other heroes first before we can even think about another Justice League film.

Wonder Woman 1984 also stars Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, and Pedro Pascal. It is scheduled to open in theaters on June 5, 2020.
