Chris Hemsworth can be quite a character. Now it looks like he will take that talent to the ring as he will play Hulk Hogan in a new biopic about the wrestler that will be directed by The Joker helmer Todd Phillips. More on the report below.
Per THR, the untitled Hulk Hogan biopic will be developed over at Netflix. Scott Silver, who will be collaborating with Phillips once again, will be penning the script. The two worked together on the Batman spinoff The Joker, which Silver also wrote the script for.
Hogan, whose real name is Terry Gene Bollea, was one of the biggest figures to appear in entertainment wrestling in the late 1980s. But his role in the World Wrestling Federation went beyond the ring. He also appeared in a variety of roles in films like Mr. Nanny and 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain. He also appeared in television on shows like Thunder in Paradise, and his very own reality TV show.
While his popularity has diminished throughout the years, his stock rose once more when he filed a lawsuit against the now-defunct Gawker, who had released a sex tape of the former wrestler. Hogan’s claims included invasion of privacy, infringement of personality rights, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Not only did the jury find Gawker guilty on all charges, but they awarded Hogan over $100 million in compensatory damages and punitive damages.
But don’t expect to see a biopic that encompasses Hogan’s entire life. Instead, sources report it will focus on his rise to stardom, described as “an origin story of the Hulkster and Hulkamania.”
According to the report, the deal took months to put together, and will require the use of life rights. Hogan will act as a consultant. He will also be an executive producer on the film.
As for Hemsworth, he seems to be perfect for the role as he can capture Hogan’s body frame. Not only that, but we may get to see Hemsworth bring out his comedic side as the former WWF, now WWE, is filled with hilariously weird rivalries. While the tone of the film has yet to be confirmed, it should be interesting to see how Phillips will tackle the project and if he will be able to put Hemsworth’s underused comedic talents to good use.
Of course, we will keep you updated as soon as more developments come in.
