Frank Herbert‘s sci-fi epic Dune is being adapted for the big screen once again. The film, which is being directed by Denis Villeneuve, is a sprawling epic featuring a large number of characters that are part of royal families competing over a valuable planetary resource. In the film, one of the noble families is betrayed and it is up to one of the dutiful royal sons to lead a rebellion that will help restore his family’s claim. But this won’t be just another sci-fi film adaptation, as the film will explore themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship with nature.
We know that Villeneuve has assembled quite a cast to appear in this possible two-part epic. And now, another actor has joined the fray. According to new reports, Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s David Dastmalchian will join the film. More on the report below.
Deadline says Dastmalchian is the latest actor to join the cast. According to their report, the actor will play Piter De Vries, a twisted Mentat. A mentat is basically a human trained to perform mental functions rivaling computers.
The film also stars Timothee Chalamet, who will play Paul Atreides. He will be joined by Charlotte Rampling, Dave Bautista, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, and Stellan Skarsgard.
Isaac is in talks to play Duke Leto Atreides, Paul’s father; while Ferguson will play Lady Jessica, Leto’s wife and Paul’s mother. As for Skarsgard, he will play the villainous Baron Harkonnen, who will be aided by Bautista’s Beast Rabban, Baron Harkonnen’s nephew. Meanwhile, Rampling will play the Reverend Mother Mohiam, a high-powered cleric.
Zendaya will play Chani, who is described as “the girl of Paul’s dreams who takes on a leading role as his proper love interest.” While Bardem will play a leader of a Fremen tribe.
Both Jason Momoa and Josh Brolin are currently in talks to play Duncan Idaho and Gurney Halleck, respectively. Duncan Idaho is described as a fierce swordsmaster who is fiercely loyal to the Atreides family, while Gurney Halleck is described as a troubadour-swordsman loyal to the family who is instrumental in the wakening of Atreides’ cosmic powers, which will start a revolution.
Production is scheduled to begin later this spring in Budapest and Jordan. Written by Villeneuve, Eric Roth, and Jon Spaihts, Dune will open in theaters on November 20, 2020.
