Taron Egerton has an unbelievably good singing voice. It’s a bit of a shame we don’t get to hear more often. Luckily, the actor will put that to good use in Rocketman, a film that covers Elton John‘s formative years as a global icon and music artist.
Directed by Dexter Fletcher, the film won’t be a traditional biopic, but rather a musical fantasy that uses Elton John’s music to tell the story of his life and career. Today Paramount released an official trailer for the film, and you can check it out below.
The trailer follows the release of a short featurette that went into the decision to choose Egerton to play the role of Elton John. Yes, that is him actually singing. And though the Grammy Award winner has a distinguished voice, Egerton does a great job of replicating it. Not only that, but he also captures the singer’s persona and audacious flair.
In the featurette, Fletcher praised Egerton for being an actor with incredible range. With music producer Giles Martin echoing those sentiments.
“Elton’s songs have defined moments in people’s lives,” Egerton said. “and the songs should come from a place of character.”
In the trailer, we see how Elton John is crafting his talents and building his brand, all the while losing those relationships due to the price of fame and fortune. The film itself is described as “based on a true fantasy.” And the alluring music sequences seem to confirm that notion. So rest easy knowing that this won’t be just another boring by the numbers biopic, but something that tells Elton John’s story through a variety of musical fantasy sequences.
