Trailers for Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin have been relying on old familiar themes and elements from the animated original. At the same time, there needed to be some new additions to generate a new wave of fans who may have never seen the Ron Clements”Ž and “ŽJohn Musker-directed original or just may not have been around to see it.
While that may have worked for some, a brand new trailer gives us a better sense of the size and scope of the live-action remake while also bringing back some of the more memorable scenes from the 1992 film. Check it out below.
Of course, with any adaptation, there are certain wow factor moments from the original that cannot be translated into the reimagining. Director Guy Ritchie‘s telling is no different. But it works well on other levels. Again, it is something that comes with the territory.
We do get to see Mena Massoud as Aladdin in action. In fact, the trailer kicks off with a colorful parkour scene of him trying to outrun palace guards. But then it transitions to some of the more familiar scenes like Genie’s (Will Smith) “Never Had A Friend Like Me” musical number, Genie making Aladdin a prince – with an added gag for those who are fans of a certain sitcom – and, of course, the “Whole New World” duet with Jasmine (Naomi Scott).
If anything, the costume and production design will be getting really high praise. Plus musical numbers with bigger and more extravagant visuals will bring a different kind of wonder to this whole new, yet familiar, world.
Aladdin also stars Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen.
