As one journey comes to an end, another begins. Marvel Studios is already looking ahead to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe by taking audiences to the cosmic side. Their first entry will be with director Chloé Zhao‘s The Eternals.
While the film is still in early development, it is already starting to have a stacked cast. One of their first moves was to bring in Angelina Jolie, who is in talks to star as Sersi. Now there are reports that Kumail Nanjiani is in talks to join the cast. More on the report below.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Nanjiani is in talks to play an unspecified role. However, their report says The Eternals will be one of two films that will start shooting later this year.
From what we know so far, the film centers on a cosmic entity known as the Celestials, who genetically experimented on humans. There’s Ikaris, a being who channels cosmic energy to greatly enhance his senses. He also has regenerative healing powers, flight, psionic powers, matter transmutation, and teleportation. Then there’s Sersi, who has superhuman strength and durability, and molecular and atomic manipulation. And because they have been endowed with great powers by the Celestials, all of them have superhuman durability, which makes them nearly immortal.
While no details on who Nanjiani would play have been made available, there is some speculation that he could play Makkari, a superpowered being with superhuman strength, speed, and reflexes, who possesses great mechanical aptitude and the ability to pilot most land and air vehicles.
If deals are reached Nanjiani would join Jolie, who has been confirmed to be in talks for the role of Sersi, another superpowered being who isn’t afraid to walk amongst humankind.
Nanjiani has been keeping himself busy as of late. He can currently be seen in one episode of The Twilight Zone, in which he plays a failing comedian who makes a deal with the devil in order to get fame which comes with a heavy price as the life he once knew is being changed. He can next be seen in Men in Black: International alongside Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. He will also appear in Stuber alongside Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista.
Zhao will be using a script written by Matthew Firpo and Ryan Firpo. No word yet on a release date for the film.
