A mismatched pair always makes for a great buddy film. Such is the case with Stuber, an action comedy starring Kumail Nanjiani as an Uber driver who has to drive around a tough and gritty cop (Dave Bautista) in his search for a murder suspect.
What could possibly go wrong? Well, apparently, and obviously, a lot. Check out the first trailer for Stuber below.
A lengthy preview of Stuber was shown during SXSW a few weeks back, and it was met with resounding applause. Most of us already know that Nanjiani can bring the funny. But Bautista displays a different kind of comedic talent than the one he has shown in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. He seems funnier, and doesn’t rely on the character being so dim.
And the chemistry between the two seems very natural, allowing for more organic and well-earned laughs. It’s fun to see how the two bounce material off each other with the two of them playing two kinds of characters who would probably never be paired up together. But circumstances have drawn them together.
Written by Tripper Clancy and directed by Michael Dowse, Stuber also stars Iko Uwais (The Raid), Natalie Morales (Parks and Recreation), Mira Sorvino (Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion) and Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy). It also stars Betty Gilpin (Isn’t It Romantic?), Jimmy Tatro (American Vandal), Amin Joseph (FX’s Snowfall), and Scott Lawrence (Star Trek Into Darkness).
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
When a mild-mannered Uber driver named Stu (Kumail Nanjiani) picks up a passenger (Dave Bautista) who turns out to be a cop hot on the trail of a brutal killer, he’s thrust into a harrowing ordeal where he desperately tries to hold onto his wits, his life and his five-star rating.
Stuber opens in theaters this summer on July 12, 2019.
