Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw

The characters of the Fast and the Furious film franchise has prided themselves as being a part of a family. It doesn’t matter if the skin color is different. But when it comes to family by blood that is a bit of a different story. We will get to see a little bit of that play out in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, the first spinoff of the franchise.

In it, Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) is forced to team up with Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) in order to stop Brixton (Idris Elba), an enhanced human, from reclaiming a virus that Shaw’s younger sister (Vanessa Kirby) stole from him. Check out the trailer below.

As expected, the trailer plays up the angst between Hobbs and Shaw. The two are bitter rivals of sorts. They push each other’s buttons and annoy each other to no end. Kind of like actual brothers. And you put that theme into an action-packed franchise like The Fast and the Furious, you are setting yourself up for a good time at the theater. I mean, how often do you see the two people single-handedly bring down a nuclear smokestack with style and flair? Only in a film like Hobbs & Shaw. I’m curious to see if any of the other spinoffs will be like this.

To make things more complicated, Hobbs and Shaw’s respective families are drawn into the fight. But each of them raised a muscle-bound hero. Here we get to see Helen Mirren reprise her role as the matriarchal Shaw, who asks Deckard to take care of the youngest member of the family. Then there’s Hobbs, who will bring the fight to his Samoan family. We even get to see a little bit of those traditions.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

After eight films that have amassed almost $5 billion worldwide, the Fast & Furious franchise now features its first stand-alone vehicle as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down.

But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever “” and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister “” these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.

Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.

Hobbs & Shaw opens in theaters on August 2, 2019.
