John Cena In Talks To Join James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad will be a soft reboot. Some of the cast from the original like Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller will return to reprise their respective roles. Others like Idris Elba will play new characters that were never before seen in a DCEU franchise.

Now, Task Force X might be adding some more muscle to the group. Literally. According to new reports, John Cena is in talks to join the team. More on the report below.

Variety says Cena is in talks to join The Suicide Squad, which is set to begin production this fall. Although, it is unclear who he will play if a deal is reached. We do know that Gunn has set his sights out on adding more obscure characters like Peacemaker, Polkadot Man, and King Shark to the squad. So it could be any one of them. But how cool would it be if he played a better version of Rick Flagg, who was first played by Joel Kinnaman in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad? Although based on the casting, it doesn’t seem very likely it will go in that direction. Which leaves the three other new members that will join the team.

While The Suicide Squad would be Cena’s first major role in a comic book movie, it’s not the first time that he’s appeared in a blockbuster franchise. He was one of the antagonists in Bumblebee, the first transformers spinoff. In it, he played Jack Burns, a former U.S Army Colonel and agent of Sector 7, who was in charge of apprehending the titular Autobot.

In addition to Cena’s casting, Variety says Robbie will be back as Harley Quinn. She is the third person from the original who is returning. As aforementioned, Courtney reprises his role as Captain Boomerang, a convict who uses an assortment of boomerangs as his weapons; while Davis returns to reprise her role as Amanda Waller, the overseer of the Suicide Squad and a person who has her finger on the death button that could kill any member should they choose to go rogue.

It’s still not clear who will play the three new members of The Suicide Squad. We do know that they are Peacemaker, Polkadot Man, and King Shark. Additionally, we do not know who Elba will be playing. At first, it was thought that he would replace Will Smith as Deadshot. However, those reports were scrapped when it was revealed that they didn’t want to change anything about what Smith had set in place should he ever return to the franchise.

The Suicide Squad opens in theaters on August 6, 2021
