David Dastmalchian

It’s not unusual for James Gunn to include characters who might be considered misfits, outsiders, or troublemakers. That couldn’t have been truer in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films. But now he is putting together a new cast of misfits in The Suicide Squad. The soft reboot will bring back Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller to reprise their respective characters. They will be joined by Idris Elba, who will reportedly play a new character and not be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot; and John Cena, who is said to be in negotiations for a role in the film as well.

Now there are reports that confirm David Dastmalchian and Daniela Melchior will be added. According to these reports, Dastmalchian will be playing Polka-Dot Man, while Melchior will play Ratcatcher. More on this below.

Variety says Melchior’s character will not be the same as they are in the comic. For one thing, the Ratcatcher of the comics was portrayed as male. But Gunn’s vision of the character will be played by Melchior, who is a female. Additionally, the character will have a connection to Elba’s character, who has not been revealed as of yet.

Ratcatcher’s abilities include control over an army of sewer rats, manipulation over various things with cyanide gases, and the use of a gas gun. So it only makes sense that Melchior’s character is something similar to that. We will just have to wait and see.

As for Dastmalchian, THR says the Ant-Man and the Wasp actor will play Polka-Dot Man. As silly as the character’s name sounds, he has some very interesting powers and special abilities. Abner Krill is able to use his bizarre costume covered in spots in a variety of ways. These spots could create deadly weapons and a bizarre escape vehicle.

The Suicide Squad lineup may be filled with silly characters, but with Gunn behind the camera, it seems like this team of misfits could be headed in the right direction. Which is what the franchise needs, especially after David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was a poor attempt to replicate what Gunn did with Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Suicide Squad opens on August 6, 2021.
