Though video game film adaptations have garnered very mixed to horrible results, the craze isn’t ending anytime soon. Paramount has released the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog, a CGI-animation and live-action hybrid that sees the title character, who is animated, interacting in the real world.
Now we get to see why Sonic (voice of Ben Schwartz) is here and how he will protect this world from the likes of Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Check out the trailer and a new poster below.
Okay, right from the get-go, you have a feeling that this is going to be bad. Sonic doesn’t quite look like he fits in with the real world the way that Pikachu does in Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. However, this is just the first trailer, so I should reserve my opinions until I see the film in its entirety. Still, there’s no denying that this is a pretty bad first impression.
But the film looks like it will be embracing the silliness of a speedy blue hedgehog coexisting in a live-action world. Like the fact that Sonic leaves electrified blue quills behind as he runs 760 mph, much to the astonishment of a police officer (Jason Marsden). But his presence has become so much of a problem that the US military recommends using one of the most notorious evil scientists in the history of notorious evil scientists: Dr. Robotnik.
Carrey brings back that wacky kind of comedy we’ve seen in the past. Interrupting people, insulting them, etc.
We then get to see some of the comedic and action beats, which feature some familiar sounds to those who might be fans of the games the movie is based on. Not quite sure how the mechanics of the rings opening up portals work, though. Last time I checked, Sonic simply collected them. And there seems to be a lot of ground to cover as Sonic travels from the heartland USA to major cities, and what looks like the Sahara desert.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Directed by Jeff Fowler, using a script written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller and Oren Uziel, Sonic the Hedgehog opens into theaters November 8, 2019.
