Avengers: Endgame is quickly showing how much of a box office powerhouse it has become since it opened 12 days ago. After it debuted to a very impressive $1.2 billion worldwide, the film continued its dominance at the theaters, overshadowing the likes of newcomers like Long Shot, The Intruder, and Uglydolls. Not only that, but it’s reached $2 billion faster than any other movie; only four other films have made that rare accomplishment. Additionally, it has eclipsed James Cameron’s Titanic box office totals. More on the report here below.
Box Office Mojo says Avengers: Endgame added $145.8 million to its domestic totals and $282 million internationally. This takes its 12-day total to $2.188 billion. This would make Marvel Studios’ latest film the second largest global release of all time, trailing James Cameron’s Avatar ($2.7 billion) by $600 million.
While it’s likely that Avengers: Endgame could surpass Avatar for the all-time worldwide box office, it remains to be seen if it could beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which currently stands at $936.6 million.
Of course, Avengers: Endgame‘s numbers are bound to see a drop off in the coming weeks. There was a 59.2% drop for the film, which is pretty much the average for any Marvel film. They generally start off strong before seeing a drop off like this. There was also very little competition. Making a surprising hit was stalker drama The Intruder, starring Dennis Quaid, Meagan Good, and Michael Ealy, which opened with a very impressive $11 million. This was followed by the romantic comedy The Long Shot, starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen. STX’s animated musical Uglydolls, featuring the voice talents of Kelly Clarkson, Janelle Monae, and Nick Jonas, came in a very distant fourth.
Since Avengers: Endgame has opened, it has become the fastest film to reach $500 million.
Now the question becomes can it surpass Avatar. Again, it comes down to how leggy Avengers: Endgame can be in a summer blockbuster season. Detective Pikachu, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and even Disney films like Aladdin, Toy Story 4, and Dark Phoenix are just some of the titles that pose the biggest threat to Avengers: Endgame from passing Avatar.
Of course, we will keep you posted if Avengers: Endgame can make any of this happen. So cross your fingers and stay tuned.
