Avengers: Endgame starring Chris Evans as Captain America

Avengers: Endgame has proven to be one of the biggest epics that Marvel Studios has been able to put out. But it also brought a bittersweet conclusion to the stories for some of our favorite heroes. If you are reading this, you should expect to see some spoilers below, but as The Russo Brothers have said, people are free to talk about the movie, spoilers and all, starting today. So check out what screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had to say about Steve Rogers/Captain America.

Now that you are here, you must have seen the movie, but again, SPOILERS….

Time travel plays a huge role in Avengers: Endgame. The thing about it, though, is that it doesn’t function or work like the kind of time travel we have seen in other films like Back To The Future, Star Trek Terminator, A Wrinkle In Time, or Hot Tub Time Machine.

If you were to time travel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, your future becomes your past, and whatever you do in the past you wouldn’t be the same person, as Banner (Mark Ruffalo) so aptly put it. Furthermore, an already established timeline is already set in stone, and while changing events could have an effect on the said timeline, it would instead create an alternate timeline, as The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) put it.

This is where Steve Rogers/Captain America becomes the center of attention. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, we see Captain America return all six Infinity Stones to its proper timeline. But instead of returning back to 2023, he stayed in what we presume to be the 1940s to be with his true love Peggy Carter (Haley Atwell).

So does this mean that there are two Captain Americas? Well, that’s what co-writer Christopher Markus seems to hint at. Here’s what he told Fandango:

That is our theory. We are not experts on time travel, but the Ancient One specifically states that when you take an Infinity Stone out of a timeline it creates a new timeline. So Steve going back and just being there would not create a new timeline. So I reject the “Steve is in an alternate reality” theory.

I do believe that there is simply a period in world history from about ’48 to now where there are two Steve Rogers. And anyway, for a large chunk of that one of them is frozen in ice. So it’s not like they’d be running into each other.

So what exactly did Steve do when he went to the 1940s? Markus also had an answer for that:

Possibly. I think maybe all I did was Steve was a stay-at-home dad and Peggy went to work at S.H.I.E.L.D. I don’t know that there were any adventures.

Well, sounds like Steve really did have a taste of that life Tony suggested that he have. He has gone through so much, and it is really only fair that after he has gone above and beyond his duty that he get the happiness he deserves.

Avengers: Endgame is out in theaters now.
