Midsommar

A24 has released a new trailer for Midsommar, Ari Aster‘s latest directorial effort and follow-up to the bone-chilling Hereditary.

The film, which stars Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor, centers on a group of friends who venture out to a remote part of Sweden to attend a once in a lifetime festival. Though things may look all sunshine and rainbows, underneath it lies something truly sinister. Check out the latest trailer below.

It’s almost impossible to get a read on just how disturbing this mysterious festival really is. While everything looks happy-go-lucky, it takes a dark and ominous turn, when the group ingests a drink that looks like it distorts perception and renders the person incapable of understanding what is going on. Soon the evil presence surrounding this festival starts to rise, and the group is unable to escape its cold grasp.

The fact that it takes place in a setting that is so sunny, flowery, and colorful is a nice contrast to the ultra-creepy tone. Especially since most horror films take place in the dark. And, of course, the group starts to question everything about the festival, but they get vague answers and fall deeper into whatever it is they have gotten themselves into.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Dani (Florence Pugh) and Christian (Jack Reynor) are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing. From the visionary mind of Ari Aster comes a dread-soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight.

Written and directed by Aster, the film also stars William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Archie Madekwe, Ellora Torchia, and Will Poulter.

Midsommar will open in theaters on July 3, 2019.
